What is Markdown?

Markdown is a lightweight markup language that formats text with simple symbols: # for headings, asterisks for bold and italics, dashes for lists. It is the format behind GitHub READMEs, technical documentation, Notion, Obsidian, Reddit, Discord and many static site generators.

This editor uses GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM), the most widely used flavor, which adds tables, task lists, strikethrough and autolinks. The preview is sanitized with DOMPurify, so pasting third-party Markdown is safe.

Frequently asked questions

Is this editor compatible with GitHub Markdown?

Yes. It supports GitHub Flavored Markdown: tables, task lists with [ ] and [x], strikethrough with ~~, fenced code blocks with ``` and autolinks.

Where is my text saved?

Only in your browser's local storage, so you don't lose your draft on reload. Nothing is sent to a server. Click "Clear" to remove it.

Can I convert Markdown to HTML?

Yes. "Copy HTML" copies the generated HTML to your clipboard, and "Export HTML" downloads a complete HTML document with basic styling, ready to open in any browser.

Is it safe to paste Markdown that contains HTML?

Yes. The resulting HTML is sanitized with DOMPurify before it is displayed, stripping scripts and dangerous attributes.
